Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy upon him) said:
“There is nothing more beneficial for the servant in his worldly life and his Hereafter, and nothing closer to his salvation, than deep reflection upon the Qur’an, prolonged contemplation of it, and gathering one’s mind upon the meanings of its verses.
For it reveals to the servant the landmarks of good and evil in their entirety, along with their paths, their causes, their ends, their fruits, and the final outcomes of their people.
It places into his hand the keys to the treasures of happiness and beneficial knowledge. It firmly establishes the foundations of faith within his heart, raises its structure, and strengthens its pillars.
It shows him within his heart the true reality of this world and the Hereafter, and of Paradise and the Fire. It brings before him the nations and shows him the Days of Allah among them. It enables him to perceive the places of lessons and reflection, and makes him witness Allah’s justice and His bounty.
It acquaints him with His Lord—His Essence, His Names, His Attributes, and His Actions—what He loves and what He hates. It shows him the path that leads to Him, what awaits those who travel upon it after they reach Him and arrive before Him, as well as the obstacles that cut off the path and its afflictions.
It makes him know the soul and its characteristics, the things that corrupt deeds and the things that rectify them. It shows him the path of the people of Paradise and the people of the Fire—their deeds, their conditions, and their distinguishing marks.
It shows him the ranks of the people of happiness and the people of misery, and the categories of creation—what they unite upon and what they differ concerning.”
