Ibn al Qayyim رحمه الله said:

Indeed your shaming your brother for his sin is a greater sin than his sin and worse than his disobedience because it contains the arrogance of obedience self admiration and praising the self and declaring it free of sin while making it seem that your brother is the one who carried it

And perhaps his brokenness because of his sin and what it caused him of humility and submission and self reproach and freeing himself from the illness of claiming greatness pride and self conceit and his standing before Allah with head lowered gaze humbled and heart broken is more beneficial for him and better for him than the arrogance of your obedience your multiplying it your counting it as something great and your acting as though you have done Allah and His creation a favour by it

How close this sinner is to the mercy of Allah and how close this self satisfied person is to the anger of Allah

A sin that makes you humble before Him is more beloved to Him than an act of obedience by which you feel proud before Him

The groaning of sinners is more beloved to Him than the loud chanting of those who glorify Him while feeling self satisfied

And perhaps Allah gave him through this sin a medicine by which He extracted a deadly disease that is in you while you do not realize

Allah has secrets concerning the people of obedience and the people of disobedience that none knows except Him and none sees them except those with insight who recognize from them only what human understanding can reach and beyond that is what even the noble recording angels do not look into
