All celebrations that contradict the legislated Islamic festivals are newly invented innovations.

They were not known during the time of the righteous predecessors (the Salaf), and their origin may even come from non-Muslims. Thus they combine innovation with imitation of the enemies of Allah, the Exalted.

The legislated Islamic festivals are well known among the people of Islam. They are:

  • Eid al-Fitr
  • Eid al-Adha
  • The weekly Eid (Friday)

There are no other festivals in Islam besides these three. Any festivals that appeared after that, or any celebrations invented besides them, are rejected upon those who introduced them and are invalid in the legislation of Allah.

This is based on the statement of the Prophet ﷺ:

“Whoever introduces into this matter of ours something that is not from it, it will be rejected.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)

Meaning: it is rejected and not accepted by Allah.
