Types of Guidance Attributed to Allah

الهداية العامة

General Universal Guidance

This is Allah guiding every created being toward what preserves its life and sustains it. It includes all living creatures — humans, animals, insects, and every form of life.

Qur’anic Evidence

“Our Lord is He who gave everything its creation, then guided it.”

(Qur’an 20:50)

This includes instinctive guidance such as animals finding food, protecting themselves, and navigating their environment.

هداية الإرشاد والبيان

Guidance of Clarification and Instruction

This is guidance through revelation, explanation, and proof. It establishes the truth for morally responsible beings so that no one is punished until the message has been made clear.

Qur’anic Evidence

“As for Thamud, We guided them, but they preferred blindness over guidance.”

(Qur’an 41:17)

This type of guidance comes through Prophets, scriptures, scholars, and daʿwah.

هداية التوفيق والإلهام

Guidance of Divine Enablement (Tawfīq)

This is Allah opening a person’s heart to accept the truth, love it, and act upon it. This form of guidance belongs exclusively to Allah.

Qur’anic Evidence

“Whomever Allah guides, he is truly guided.”

(Qur’an 7:178)

“You do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills.”

(Qur’an 28:56)

Even the Prophet ﷺ could clarify the truth, but only Allah grants success in accepting it.

الهداية يوم القيامة

Guidance on the Day of Judgment

This refers to being directed to one’s final destination in the Hereafter.

الهداية إلى الجنة

Guidance to Paradise

“All praise is for Allah who guided us to this.”

(Qur’an 7:43)

الهداية إلى النار

Guidance to the Fire

“Guide them to the path of Hell.”

(Qur’an 37:23)

In this context, guidance means directing people to their final abode.
